JOINT STATEMENT
September
9, 2002
A
historic meeting was convened between the leadership of the two
allied parties (KDP & PUK), in the presence of Masoud Barzani
and Jalal Talabani, on September 7-8, 2002, in Salahadin, Arbil.
This event gives new inspiration and hope for the people of Kurdistan
and Iraq toward a brighter horizon.
The
talks were conducted in a humble, democratic and conciliatory
spirit for the cherished goals of a future Iraq- democratic, pluralistic,
federal and united-, addressing the Kurdish question and issues
of peace and security in the Middle East.
During the discussion both parties were in full accord concerning
their stance on issues of the global democratic transformation,
the need to combat terrorism, fanaticism and dictatorship. Both
parties affirm that new developments must be seized and utilized
for the benefit of the people of Iraq and Kurdistan.
The
meeting agreed to establish four working committees for the purposes
of: preparing a joint project on the concept of federalism; internal
normalization of Kurdistan region; security issues and devising
a common policy on the regional and international levels regarding
the new developments.
It
also decided that the Kurdistan National Assembly would be convened
on October 4, 2002, in the parliament chamber in Arbil, with the
full participation of the two major parliamentary blocks, together
with that of the Purple (Christian) block. The procedural mechanism
for the conduct of the National Assembly business was agreed upon.
A
number of decisions were made with regard to the participation
of other Kurdistani political parties and forces in the national
and democratic efforts; the strengthening of ties and solidarity
between the people of Iraq and the Kurdistan liberation movement
within the Iraqi opposition for the benefit of a better future
Iraq and for the legitimate rights of Kurds, Turkomen, Assyrians
and Caldeans.
The
two parties affirmed their joint commitment to strengthen relations
with the neighboring countries on the basis of friendship, fraternity
and non-interference in internal affairs of others.
